What breed of dog is my social media hound?

Meet my dog Jolene. (cue the Dolly Parton song)

This post doesn’t have much do do with website design or social media, other than the fact that I call Jolene my little social media hound. But you will see her in quite a few of my social media posts – and she likes to photo bomb my live videos from time to time!

I adopted Jolene from an animal shelter and have no idea what breed of dog she is. Some of my guesses include Irish setter, German shepherd, dachshund, or maybe even Australian shepherd. At this point, your guess is as good as mine!

I’ll know soon though, because the folks at Wisdom Panel offered us a DNA test to find out. I got the Wisdom Panel Essential Dog DNA Collection Kit a few days ago. Here’s what it covers:

  • Test for 350+ breeds, types, and varieties—more than any other dog DNA test available
  • Identify breed mix down to 1%
  • Trace your dog’s ancestry back to their great-grandparents
  • Screen for 25+ medical complications, such as MDR1—important info to know before your pup takes medication or undergoes a medical procedure (e.g., spay/neuter)
  • Understand coat and eye color, ideal weight range, and more with 35+ trait tests

To do the test, they just need a little bit of of Jolene’s DNA. So I used the swabs in the kit to swirl around on the inside of her cheeks. Then I put them in the return postage-paid box, sealed it up, and dropped in the mailbox. It couldn’t be much easier.

It’ll take 2 or 3 weeks for them to send me the results. They’ll let me know by email then I can download the results from their website.

I’ll be posting the results on my Facebook page first, where people are already taking their best guess.

Regardless of what the results are, Jolene is a very happy, much-loved dog! It’ll be good to know what breed she is, but even more important is whether or not the test will reveal any potential health problems. Whatever breed she is, I want her to be with me for a long time.

What breed of dog do you think Jolene is? Post a message here, or on my Facebook page. I’ve also included a bit more info about her on my Facebook page.
